Syosset FD: 'Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries'

As we 'spring forward' Sunday, the Syosset Fire Department says it's also time to change your smoke detector batteries.

Many in the United States will rise Sunday morning a little groggy thanks to Daylight Savings Time. Clocks push forward one hour Sunday at 2 a.m.

, the Syosset Fire Department's Fire Prevention Officer and former chief, Ken Johnson, reminded business owners of a simple rule of thumb.

"Change your clocks, change your batteries," he told the group of business owners.

Smoke detector batteries should be changed twice a year. Detectors themselves should be replaced altogether about every 10 years.

"When you buy a detector, write the date of purchase on the back," advised Johnson.

The "spring forward" can sometimes be a rough adjustment sleepwise. However, this jet-less lag can be avoided with a simple walk and a melatonin supplement, according to this video from the Huffington Post.
