Syosset Struck by Storm

Weather warnings issued as LIPA reports some outages in the area.

Strong winds and rain led to fallen trees and road closures in Syosset Wednesday afternoon as the National Weather Service issued wind and flooding advisories until 6 p.m.

Many streets in Syosset were affected by the strong winds - garbage cans were blown over, tree branches blocked off some streets and even some newly put up Christmas decorations were knocked over due to the wind.

Earlier in the day, a large tree that fell on the street led to a road closure on Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway entrance at Jericho Turnpike. All lanes were blocked off, but the tree was removed later in the afternoon.

Patchy fog, heavy rain, and gusts up to 50 mph were predicted by the National Weather Service. "Rainfall rates of around a half an inch per hour will result in flooding of  poor drainage areas. Fallen leaves will also clog drains... which  will exacerbate the flooding," the NWS said.

The Long Island Power Authority was listing numerous power outages across the Island but there were no immediate reports of car accidents related to the weather.
