Syosset Then and Now Answer: Present Day Black Wolf

May's Corner used to stand where the Black Wolf Bar now sits.

Patch user Steve quickly guessed correctly that yesterday's May's corner is where the present day Black Wolf American Sports Bar & Grill sits.

From general store to brand new sports bar, the corner of Jackson Avenue and Convent Road has seen quite a revolution over the span of a century. This corner has gone from housing a family's general store owned by Theodore and Georgiana May, according to A Syosset Scrapbook, to currently housing a hot spot for watching sports and eating atomic wings.

In 1896, the people of Syosset were in a tizzy when the owner of this general store and saloon, John DeVine, was appointed Syosset's postmaster. In those days, there was no home mail delivery, so residents had to go to the postmaster's home or place of business to collect and send mail. Typically, this was the job of women or children. Because the saloon area was separated from the general store/post office area only by a thin partition, residents felt this was an inappropriate, indecent place for ladies and children to have to visit in order to get their mail.
