Syosset Train Commute Delayed by Fire

Customers seem happy problems weren't worse.

Train service to all LIRR branches–except the Port Washington line–was suspended late Monday morning. Delays are expected to continue into the evening rush hour.

According to Mike Charles of the LIRR press office, the railroad is coming up with an "alternative service plan."

At 3:21 p.m., the LIRR updated their service advistory to read: "Very limited service has been restored through Jamaica. Please listen to announcements for further service details."

The interruption in service was caused by a fire in the LIRR's switching tower located on the east side of Jamaica. The Port Washington line was not affected because it does not travel through Jamaica.

At the Syosset LIRR station delays did not appear to be excessive. A woman waiting in her SUV to pick up someone said she got a message from her passenger; he said he would only be delayed 15 to 20 minutes from the normal 6:10 p.m. arrival.

Sure enough, the train arrived at 6:28 p.m.

Said one man quickly heading toward his car, "It was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be."
