Thousands of Syosset Homes Still Without Power Monday

Number of outages actually increases Monday, according to LIPA website.

A day after Hurricane Irene knocked out power in thousands of area homes and businesses Sunday, many in Syosset Monday woke up in the dark - even some who had power on Sunday.

Power outages in Syosset total 5,178 customers out of 7,100 as of 12 p.m. Monday, according to the utility’s storm center website. That number is up from Sunday's total of 3,602.

Muttontown totals 987 customers without power out of 1,348, Woodbury 899 out of 3,795, and 2,836 out of 5,192 in Jericho, as of Monday morning.

Overall in Nassau County, there were 148,206 without power late Monday morning, according to LIPA, including 56,371 (out of 122,142) in the Town of Oyster Bay. In Nassau and Suffolk County as well as the Rockaway Peninsula combined, 368,097 LIPA customers were without power Monday morning out of 1.1 million.

LIPA issued a statement on its website Monday morning saying that "damage assessment efforts will continue today" and "full restoration is expected to take days." The utility also added that they "are unable to provide an estimated restoration time for most customers."

An update on the LIPA Twitter page said that they expect 95 percent of all outages to be restored by the end of the day Friday.
