Tree Nearly Slams House

It fell just in front of a duplex Thursday.

The full extent of Mother Nature's wrath continued to show itself in Syosset Friday following the previous day's short but powerful storm.

A duplex on Devine Avenue barely avoided major damage when the storm snapped a tree in half, sending it into the front yard. The same storm sent a tree onto a house on Syosset Circle.

No one was at the Devine Avenue house Friday, but a neighbor who referred to himself only as Bob saw what happened Thursday between 2:30 p.m.-3 p.m.

"I was on the phone and all of a sudden we got a dark gray sky," Bob said. "I had my windows open, and the wind came in and blew all the papers off that were on the kitchen table."

Shortly after he walked outside and thought only a small bush had made its way onto the street. Only later did he realize the extent of the fallen foliage.

Bob said LIPA showed up around 1 a.m. Friday morning to restore power and shear off some branches. Town workers came in later Friday to clear branches that extended 8-10 feet onto the road.

But the Syosset area continues to be lucky as it pertains to outages. As of 6:30 p.m. Friday evening the LIPA website listed only nine Syosset customers without power, and only five in Woodbury.
