Community Corner

Week in Review

It's been an interesting first week for Syosset Patch.

Syosset Patch launched on Wednesday, and one thing is already quite apparent: A diverse mix of people and issues fill a place that should be called anything but a sleepy hamlet.

There's the business owner, David Marmurek, who has found professional and personal satisfaction in NASCAR; the dance teacher, Martha Merideth, who started touching the Syosset community when JFK was still in the Oval Office; the WNBA legend, Sue Bird, who has found a second successful career overseas; and the honor student, Kevin Schultz, who trudges through in a tough job market to realize his dreams.

No place is without issues, and these days folks are talking about the continuing red tape getting Jackson Avenue renovated, and the ongoing fight by residents of Syosset Mobile Home Park to avoid eviction.

But the good news is Syosset got through another winter storm relatively unscathed, and when the weather finally gets warm golfers won't be paying more at the Town of Oyster Bay course. After their round maybe they can embellish their score and soothe their appetite at either Wild Fig or Galangal 2.

If Week 2 is anything like this, it's going to be one heck of a ride.
