Post Library Association Sleepy Hollow Trip

The “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” began almost 200 years ago when Washington Irving wrote about the beautiful valley straddling along the shores of the Hudson River. Just 30 miles outside of New York City, our bus trip will afford us the opportunity to view panoramic and scenic vistas of the Hudson River, the Palisades Mountain Range and the Tappan Zee Bridge.

Depending on time restraints we will visit the Old Dutch Church and Burying Ground where Ichabod Crane had sequestered himself from the Headless Horseman in Washington Irving’s short story. The church has been in use since 1690. We will also visit The Sleepy Hollow Cemetery where we can see the final resting sites of such notable figures as Washington Irving, Andrew Carnegie, Walter Chrysler, William Rockefeller, Elizabeth Arden, and many others. Our trip will take us to Philipsburg Manor and Union Church next. The historic Dutch manor and mill were restored to their original appearance in the late 17th/ early 18th century and Union Church has stain glass windows by Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall. Lunch will be at the Bridge View Tavern and the last stop will be to Sunnyside, the home of Washington Irving.

** We will be meeting in the morning at Long Island University and then traveling by bus to Sleepy Hollow.
