Community Corner

Relay for Life

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is returning to Syosset on Saturday May 12, 2012.  Relay For Life is an opportunity for the community to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back.

Relay For Life event is a celebration of hope and survivorship.  Teams take turns walking a track throughout the night in honor of those who have fought cancer and in memory of those who are no longer with us. Funds raised through Relay For Life support the lifesaving work of the American Cancer Society.

Each Relay kicks off with a survivor lap, where survivors walk the first lap of the event and are honored by the other attendees. Anyone in the community who is a survivor or a caregiver and would like to take part in this lap is encouraged to register. When the sun goes down, the entire community is invited to watch the lighting of hundreds of luminaria bags in a moving ceremony honoring those who survived the cancer fight and remembering loved ones lost to the disease.
