Syosset Fire Department Recruitment Open House

In order to maintain the standard of excellence and the level of safety the community has come to expect from the Syosset FD, the Department is kicking off its "Save a Life - Change Your Life" recruitment campaign to double the number of new recruits over the next 12 to 18 months. The Fire Department will hold a Recruitment Open House on Sunday, June 6th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Headquarters at 50 Cold Spring Rd. in Syosset where fire and EMS personnel will answer residents' questions about joining the Department.

The Syosset Fire Department has been providing fire protection, fire prevention and a variety of other public safety services, including emergency medical services, to the citizens of the greater Syosset-Woodbury community since 1915. Over the years, both the town and the Fire Department have grown considerably, and today, the SFD is among the busiest fire departments on Long Island, covering the largest fire protection district in Nassau County. The Fire Department answers up to 2,000 emergency alarms each year. The members protect more than 33,000 residents, an estimated 250,000 non-residents, and a diverse mix of residential, commercial and industrial structures, including 19 school facilities, 16 houses of worship, four nursing homes and a hospital.

"Our recruitment open house will be a great opportunity for residents to learn more about how to become a volunteer and to talk to current members about their experiences," said Chief John Capobianco. "As a member of the Syosset Fire Department, you will get the satisfaction of making a difference in your community by helping your neighbors when they need you most. You would also become part of the fire service family and make friends with men and women of all ages and walks of life."

The Open House will also provide prospective volunteers with a first-hand opportunity to try on firefighting gear, and to check out some of the Department's fire and rescue apparatus.

Members of the Syosset Fire Department are also spending time at the Stillwell Woods Preserve to pass out recruitment flyers and talk to families at various soccer and little league games. Recruitment efforts are also being made at a number of other community events.
