Civil Rights Leaders Commemorated with 'March of Unity'
Glen Cove religious organizations celebrated legacies of both Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Anne Frank with a march and performance. More than 200 people from 10 different community organizations marched through the streets of Glen Cove Sunday in commemoration of the legacy left by civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The March of Unity paid homage to the 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery in which Dr. King led the march, arms linked with Rabbi Abraham Joshua Herschel.
The Town of Islip and the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals are collaborating on a unique adoption effort to ensure that Miracle, the pooch found in a West Islip dumpster a few days after Christmas, finds a good home.

Ray Kearney, of Miller Place, won an acoustic guitar signed by performers that visited the Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts in 2013. The guitar, which was donated by Patchogue's Family Melody Center, is estimated to now be worth $1,500-$2,000 with signatures from the likes of Martin Sexton, Uncle Cracker, Lauren Allaina, Michael and Kevin Bacon among several others.

W.T. Clarke High School senior Lady Velasquez earned a Kindle Fire Netbook for her award-winning essay on Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina. The East Meadow student’s writing placed third in Optimum’s sixth annual Power to Learn “Hispanic Heritage Month” essay contest.
Michael Schwartz, a graduate of Kennedy High School, was selected by NBC Sports to assist with the network's coverage of the XXII Olympic Winter Games, being held Feb. 6-23 in Sochi, Russia.
A small harbor seal found alive on the beach in Long Beach on Sunday afternoon was gone by Monday morning, it's whereabout unknown, according to the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation and concerned citizens that found and kept an eye on the mammal. A rescue team from the foundation, a nonprofit organization that recovers any marine mammals or sea turtles that wash ashore in New York state, responded to multiple calls about the seal that was found on Laurelton Boulevard beach at about 2 p.m. Jan 12.
Syosset Student Named National Young Arts Foundation Finalist
Syosset High School student Adam Katz has been named a National YoungArts Foundation finalist in Cinematic Arts and participated in the 33rd annual YoungArts Week in Miami from Jan. 6-12. Adam was one of 171 finalists from 687 winners and a total of 11,000 applications across 10 disciplines covering the fields of literary, performing, visual and design arts.
Commack Alumna to Premiere in International Film Festival
Commack graduate Ashley Reyes will make her latest film debut this month at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, playing the role of “Daisy” in the movie, “Night Has Fallen.”
Photographer's Work Shows in Italy
Carrie-Anne Gonzalez, who co-owns Carrie Weston Studios in East Northport has taken her work international. The photographer was recently accepted into the prestigious art show, “Donna,” in the city of Gubbio, Italy. Her work is on display at the Hall of the Captains of the Palazzo dei Consoli in Via Baldassini.
Wizards Give Crowd Hoops and Alley Oops at Hauppauge High School
It's not too often you see the superintendent of a Long Island High School take on some super basketball players in a game refereed by a county legislator, but if you were at the Hauppauge High School gymnasium Saturday night, that's exactly what you saw. The Harlem Wizards trotted in to town to take on the staff and administrators of Hauppauge schools in a game of basketball filled with fun, hoops and alley oops arranged by the Forest Brook Elementary PTA.
