Woodbury Jewish Center Severs Ties with Morrell Caterers

WJC serves 10-day notice of termination, cites breaches of contract and Jewish laws.

The Woodbury Jewish Center gave a 10-day notice of termination to Morrell Caterers Thursday. The center, one of the caterer's major clients, ordered Morrell's out by Mar. 5 because of alleged breaches of contract and halachic law, according to a Thursday report in The Jewish Week.

Morrell Caterers recently came under fire after claiming they were told to prepare kosher food and non-kosher food in the same vicinity. This latest news comes just one week after three area rabbis urged the community in this matter. Despite their pleas and a written letter of support from Vaad Harabonim, who was responsible for supervising Morrell's practices, Woodbury Jewish Center has decided to finally end their association with the caterers.

The Jewish Week reported Morrell Caterers would be in court Thursday seeking a temporary restraining order.

Woodbury Jewish Center's Rabbi Raphael Adler declined to comment on the termination because of involvement in the lawsuit. A letter was sent to congregants Thursday night to notify them of the separation.

Such a wonderful family. It tears my heart to pieces to see this 45 yr old company dirtied with such horrible accusations. My sister Sophie is best friends with scotts mom and she's just a doll. I have such respect for the family to hold their head high as they go through so much public humiliation. Scott is such a nice warm boy. I just can't see any of this as possible.

I always thought the mushroom sauce for the veal chops with the stuffed apple chestnut had cream in it but maybe it was just so good that it tasted that way. I would love the recipe! And those mini meatballs are killer!!! I know it's expensive but the best always costs more

Jane....who are you anyway? You think you know the Morrells.....seems like there's just a lot of JEALOUSY going on here.....pretty common though, most people like to see successful people fall.....don't hold your breath. Such irrelevant comments to a story you clearly know nothing about!

anonymous.....Temple Israel is NOT having a problem with Morrell Catering. He is meeting all his contractual obligations to the Temple and the rabbis who supervise his activities at the Temple continue to stand by him. At this point, we wait for proof that the allegations are true. And, yes, Scott is a tough businessman in a very tough business in difficult economic times.

There is no better catererer than Morrell Caterers! I hope none of you ever experience what it is like to be accused of something that is not true and have to defend yourself. When you are the best there are always those who look to take you down. The truth will prevail.

Do any of you know someone who is to have their wedding with Morrell in the coming months? I booked my wedding at one of the locations long before I knew any of this was going on and am hoping that it will still take place but not sure how to proceed at this point. If anyone can offer some advice or the information of someone in a similar situation I would greatly appreciate it.

If you are having your function at Temple Israel in Lawrence you should call their Office. They will put you in touch with someone who might be able to help you.

Jane...Here are the facts. Morrell and Temple Israel are in settlement discussions regarding a contract interpretation of the amount owed relating to a complex yearly utility reimbursement formula true-up. It is a minor matter that amounts to maybe $5,000 to $6,000 a year. As far as the Rabbi is concerned that concerns a contract dispute relating to a contract that the Rabbi has with Morrell and I can't speak to that. Aside from those business issues, Morrell has been meeting his obligations to the Temple and unlike Woodbury JC, the Temple has been meeting its obligations to Morrell. Hope this helps. Of course, the Temple is concerned about the allegations but at this point the Temple has no reason to believe them true regarding Temple Israel.

Itchy...Gee Itchy if life only worked like that. WJC has a contract with Morrell and unless they can prove he is in MATERIAL breach and can't correct the breach after notice, WJC is stuck with him. So far the courts appear to be siding with Morrell. If Morrell is all that you say he is, why did the WJC ever contract with him? Stupidity? Greed? What say you, Itchy? Scratch my curiosity.

Hellen....Obviously, Helen, you are "blind and dumb" to the facts. I have stated I don't know the "truth" but I'm unwilling to condemn on the basis of tainted allegations until proven. However, local 5-Towns Rabbis are supporting Morrell as well as a respected Vaad. Further, you are abusive and worse a coward by posting under a fake name.

Ah, what happen to freedom of speech? Another one of my postings was deleted. As you can see, Mich1 was replying to my comment - that is no longer there. Mmmm...
