Question: What Is Your Favorite Holiday Decoration?
Mine is a nursery school project my sister called "Christmas cat barf."
Some families fight for the privilege of placing a dazzling star atop the Christmas tree. Others gather around an antique menorah and consider the generations of Chanukahs lit up by its eight candles.
I have Christmas cat barf.

The menagerie of yarn hanging from a red ribbon you see in the picture is my favorite. It was the epitome of my nursery school art career. I remember carefully constructing the green yarn, adding a single red string in what I'd like to think was a stroke of artistic genius. I remember bringing it to my mom who gushed over how beautiful it was. I remember my great-grandmother, an Irish immigrant who, between the County Mayo accent and the dentures, I rarely understood, calling it a "wee work of art."
I also remember my sister taking a long look at it before saying, "It looks like Christmas cat barf."

Twenty years later, I still thoughtfully hang my creation on the tree as my sister says it still looks like cat barf. Twenty years later, I remember the reactions of my long gone grandparents and great-grandparents and smile, thinking of the holidays.
