Carchietta & Concannon Shine In Win Over Hicksville

Anthony Carchietta and Alex Concannon help lead Syosset over Hicksville.

On a nasty day it was Alex Concannon and Anthony Carchietta’s nasty plays that helped lead Syosset (2-0, 5-3) to a 15-2 thrashing over Hicksville (1-1, 3-4).

Syosset entered Friday’s contest with Hicksville looking for their second consecutive league win to open the 2013 season. The weather appeared to have no impact on the Braves after they came out firing on all cylinders to open the first quarter. Concannon scored off a great feed from Andrew Keith to set the tone early for the Braves. After two Carchietta goal’s and a score from Keith, Syosset lead 4-0 after the first quarter.

Syosset dominated the time of possession as the Braves defense often went through extended stretches without having to break a sweat. On defense, Kyle Haber, did a spectacular job of guarding University of North Carolina bound junior attack, Pat McCormick. McCormick was held to only one goal as Haber and the Braves defense pestered him throughout the entire course of the game.

Head coach John Calabria was impressed with his defense’s performance.

“I thought Kyle did a great job today,” Calabria said. “Today as a defensive unit I thought we played really well and we were there to help back him up when he needed it.”

The story of the game quickly turned into the Carchietta and Concannon show as both attack-men put on an offensive clinic. With 2:40 left in the first half, Concannon, scored one of the best goals of his varsity career as he weaved through two Hicksville defenders and fired a shot at point blank range for a goal to give the Braves a 7-0 lead. Just a minute later Carchietta found Concannon on a beautiful feed to give the Braves an 8-0 lead at the half.

Carchietta played arguably his best game of his career, scoring four goals and dishing out two assists. Concannon, on the other hand, continued to do what he does best - put the ball in the back of the net. Concannon finished the game with three goals as well as one assist. Concannon leads the team in goals with eighteen including eight in the past two games.

Calabria had seen enough from the majority of his starters after leading 11-0 after three quarters of play. As a result, he elected to bring on the reserves to close out the game for Syosset.

“It was a total team effort as we really came together today,” said senior defenseman Harry Schoenhaut after the game concluded. “Beating a team like Hicksville is a great accomplishment and beating them in the fashion that we did is a true testament to effort we and our excellent coaching staff put in.”

Calabria touched upon the success Carchietta and Concannon have been having on offense.

“They are trusting one another and sharing the ball,” Calabria said. “They took a step forward today.”

Concannon and Carchietta have long been friends off the lacrosse field. For the first time in both of their varsity careers the two of them would be given the opportunity to start at attack. In the offseason Concannon and Carchietta had the opportunity to play together and both feel that has contributed to their great chemistry during games.

“We just know where to find each other,” Carchietta said. “Alex is a great player so I just try to put him in a position where he can score because he does that as good as anyone I have ever played with.”

“We really didn’t get a chance to play on the same line until this summer,” Concannon added. “We started playing over the summer and we developed good chemistry. Now that we have been playing for so long it just starts to click.”

It didn’t matter what the temperature read because on this day Concannon and Carchietta were just too hot to be stopped.
