Syosset Braves Lacrosse Defeats Plainview

Syosset improves to 5-1 in the conference.

The Syosset Braves Lacrosse team entered Friday’s matchup verses Plainview looking to improve their conference record to 5-1 (7-4). Syosset needed to assert its dominance over a team in Plainview that is at the bottom of the standings in conference 1 play.

Plainview entered the game with a 1-4 conference record and overall record at 5-6.

Syosset was able to grab momentum early in this one, when senior attack Jon Camposa  went coast to coast and scored on Plainview’s Alex Seltzer. Camposa would add another goal less than a minute later to give Syosset an early 2-0 lead.

At the 9:13 mark of the first quarter Syosset’s freshman midfielder Nick Hatzipetrakos riffled a shot from point blank to give the Braves a 3-0 just 3 minutes into the game.

All within two minutes of Hatzipetrakos’ goal, both Alex Hatzopoulos and Andrew Keith fired shots across the plane to give Syosset a 5-0 just 4 minutes into the game.

Syosset goal tender Ryan Feit spoke about how fast the offense came out. “Our offense got off to a hot start,” he said. “I don’t think I have ever seen our offense get off to such a fast start.”

As the second quarter started it was Ryan Feit (14 saves) making a few key saves to keep Plainview from getting back in the game.

Plainview’s Josh Heller would tack on two goals to cut the game to as close as 5-2 midway through the 2nd but from that point on Feit and the defense shut the Plainview offense down for the rest of the game.

Syosset took a 5-2 halftime lead as they entered the locker room.

In one of the weirder games of the season, the offense for Syosset which had looked as good as it had all season suddenly regressed. Syosset would not score again until the 2:33 mark of the 3rd quarter when Freshman attack Alex Concannon (2 goals) ripped a shot on a bounce into the net.

After the game Concannon was asked about the disappearance of his teams offense.  “We just were not looking for that extra feed, he said. “I think we just lost focus or something.”

Syosset head coach John Calabria spoke about the disappearance of his offense in a post game interview. “Plainview was ready to play today,” he said. “They took us out of our game after we got off to a fast start.”

In the 4th quarter Concannon and Syosset Captain Ryan Hunter added goals to give Syosset the 8-2 victory.

Coach Calabria spoke about the shaky performance of his team despite the victory. “I’ll be honest” he said. “I didn’t think we played our best today. We are not playing our best lacrosse right now and we shouldn’t be because we want to do that in May. I will say that it does speak levels about our team that we don’t have to play our best game because we can still find away to get it done.”

Though clearly this was not the game Syosset was looking to play, they still earned another conference victory and now sit in second place in conference 1 with a conference record at 5-1.

Calabria summed the game up best. “A win is a win.”
