Jericho Chef Lends a Helping Hand

"Cake Lady" Gail Chandler donates to fundraiser for boy's physical therapy.

Big-hearted Jericho resident Gail Chandler has donned her apron, dug deep into her utility belt and forked out a last minute save for a child’s charity fundraiser.

Chandler, a master chef and owner of mobile catering services called On the Scene Cuisine and A Cake Lady creations, heard and quickly answered a call for help from the friends of little Nate Scheuer.

Nate Scheuer was born with cerebral palsy that prevents him from sitting, standing or walking like a normal child. Nate uses a special TheraSuit that helps him with physical therapy. Unfortunately, a three-week "boot camp" treatment for Nate costs close to $8,000 and is not covered by insurance.

"With cerebral palsy, their brains can't communicate to the muscles like normal," said Nate's father, David. "This suit helps build new pathways to the brain."

Friends of Nate scheduled a “Following Nate Fundraiser” at the West Hempstead Fire house at 7 p.m. this Saturday to raise money for Nate's physical therapy at Keep Moving Forward in Great Neck. When the donator of the desserts dropped out at the last minute, an emergency flare was sent up and Chandler responded in a flash.

A Jericho resident and mother of three grown children herself, Chandler will donate one of her custom designed desserts for the over 100 men, women and children attending the fundraiser.

Chandler has won numerous awards and countless praises with her wide array of  baked goods of Cakes, Cupcakes, Pies, Breads, Tarts, Muffins and more, earning her the nickname “A Cake Lady” from Long Island residents.
