Vets' Stories Survive at Syosset Library

Syosset Public Library seeks volunteers for Veterans' History Project.

Syosset veterans' stories will sit forever in the Library of Congress thanks to the . The Veterans' History Project is accepting high school volunteers to help interview and record local veterans' stories.

The project, sponsored by the Library of Congress, brings high school students and American war veterans together to record stories from the nation's past. Students will interview veterans on film and on voice recorder and Syosset Library will compile them to send to the Library of Congress.

"We have a lot of patrons who are veterans and we found there are a lot of stories out there that we wanted to preserve," said Syosset Library's Barney Levantino, who said they are excited to finally begint the project.

"Veterans will get to tell their stories firsthand to a generation that maybe doesn't often think about what veterans went through," said Syosset Library's Sharon Long, who is running the teen component.

Long and Levantino said was a success and veterans were already telling their stories to avid listeners.

Volunteers are still needed for the project and all teens in grades 10 through 12 are encouraged to take part. Interviewing will begin toward the end of June so students can finish their schoolwork.
