Speaking of 'Gentleman' Gerry Cooney

My conversation with Huntington's heavyweight boxing legend 'Gentleman' Gerry Cooney about the Long Island Fight for Charity!

One of the perks of training and fundraising for the Long Island Fight for Charity is the potential for meeting and speaking with some of the legends of boxing.

After reaching out to boxing publications and radio shows attempting to drum up interest in following my story into the ring, I spoke with someone who happened to be friends with Huntington heavyweight boxing legend, 'Gentleman Gerry' Cooney.

He spoke to Cooney who said that he woud speak with me. My conversation with the man who labeled with the name 'Great White Hope'  in 1981 for his title fight against Larry Holmes was a trip down memory lane as the boxer sounded the same as he did 30 some-odd years ago.

He invited me to go to the gym he works out in to show me some technique in the ring which I hope to do at some point before November.

More than that the advice that he gave me was short and to the point: Train hard and spar often because even though it's only three rounds when the heart is pounding and the crowd is yelling you lose your stamina very quickly!

My mistake? Mentioning that as a bellhop at Grossinger's I used to watch Larry Holmes train.

I am back in the gym tonight!
