Five Inexpensive Ways to Create Curb Appeal

Sometimes houses sell or don’t sell as a direct result of your homes curb appeal, first impressions are the most important impression. If the outside of the property doesn’t create interest or appear well-maintained, you are working against the tide from there. Here are five inexpensive ways to create positive curb appeal.

Paint and polish. A fresh coat of paint breathes new life into a tired-looking home. Polish the doorknocker and mail slot on the front door, as well as any light fixtures by the entry.

Power washer to clean dirt and mildew from the house, paths, or deck.

Manicure the grounds. Mow and edge the grass, trim the trees and bushes, and clear away dead leaves and flowers. Mulch and weed the beds, plant colorful annuals to perk up the gardens and place planters of flowers in strategic spots.

Make needed repairs. See if anything is unhinged, loose or just an eyesore and fix them. Look for broken fencing, windows and screens and make sure winter weather hasn’t left any damage that can be remedied easily. Don't forget to take a critical look at the property at night too, make sure the lights work, and replace any undersized bulbs inside and out to ensure proper illumination.

Unclutter. Tidy up the deck, patio, back yard and inside of the house. Rearrange the outdoor furniture to look inviting.  Eliminate extra furniture where it makes sense, walls should be cleaned and wherever possible less is better in wall hangings and shelf knick-knacks. Also, move any extra vehicles from the view and never leave a car on the property that you are “working on”.

Clean. Clean the windows, inside and out, wash down the walks and driveway, and hose down the siding. Clean outdoor furniture and cushions. Check for oil spots on cement surfaces, especially the garage floor and around the oil burner.

The old saying about making a good first impression couldn't be truer than when you are selling your home. Even the smallest enhancements can make a big difference in creating love at first sight for buyers.
