Tell Us: Replace LIPA with Private Company?

That's a state commission's recommendation: What do you think?

We posed a simple question on our Facebook page on Monday:

A state commission has recommeded replacing LIPA with private utility. Do you agree?

We got several responses, like this one from Scott VanPala:

"The Commission should be replaced then.. If LIPA had just trimmed the trees beforehand, NONE of this would ever have happened."

He continued: "Crisis couldve been prevented...When a properly pruned tree falls down, it should not take any wires with it. The problem is there's not enough money for pruning. What were the recommendations for the private utility to do differently?"

"Something has to be done!!!!!" concluded Debbie Goldband Dash.

What do you think? Tell us in the comments below here.

We should learn from what they do in countries like Jamaica that experience hurricanes on a much more frequent basis. They turn the power OFF before the hurricane strikes. That way there are no shortages and blowouts. Maybe some downed trees/equipment need to be dealt with but NOT full scale restoration. It's easy, practical and is preventative.

As publised recently in Newsday January 9, 2013 our Governor of NYS has plans for much needed improvements. It is good to hear that future rate increases be frozen for 3 to 5 years. However will the generous rebates for lightening and other energy saves remain in place for residents, businesses and schools?
