Carbone: Authorities "A Little Extreme" Over Arrest

Syosset drunk driving suspect still incarcerated while trying to figure out bail.

Syosset drunk driving defendant Joseph Carbone's penchant for memorable statements continued at his latest court hearing Friday morning.

Carbone, who was arrested Wednesday night after allegedly driving his Maserati over 110 mph on the LIE while intoxicated, was led into Mineola's District Court Part 9 in handcuffs around 10 a.m. He seemed somewhat confused about the court hearing, which was presided over by Judge Erica L. Prager.

According to Carbone he got the impression from a legal aid attorney he interacted with earlier that Friday's hearing would include the possible reduction of bail. Prager said that Friday's hearing only concerned who would be representing him long-term.

Carbone, of 21 Coventry Rd., explained that he had been trying to get ahold of his father about raising the $100,000 bond that was set Wednesday afternoon. He implied that he would need to figure out the financial hardship of posting bail before he would know what he would be able to manage as far as private representation.

Carbone ran off at the lip a little bit, mentioning his prior drunk driving convictions, much to the chagrin of his legal aid attorney Friday. He added that another legal aid attorney described his bail as "astronomical," and he questioned a DA request that his passport should be confiscated.

"I think because I was driving a Maserati everybody was getting a little extreme," Carbone said, earning yet another sharp rebuke from his legal aid lawyer. Carbone turned toward her and simply said, "No, it's alright."

Friday comments follow Wednesday's arrest, when an officer told Carbone he was going around 110 mph. Carbone allegedly countered that the officer's equipment wasn't functioning properly because he was actually going over 130 mph. Prager set a new hearing for Tuesday to let Carbone figure out his bail status.

Carbone, a financial consultant, said he runs a "decent-sized business" and was hopeful he can get his bail taken care of Friday. He faces up to seven years of prison on his current drunk driving charge after a prior conviction in both Nassau and Suffolk counties within the past 10 years.
