A Nassau County police officer shot and killed a wild pit bull Thursday morning in Oyster Bay after he saw it attacking a woman and a dog she was walking, according to police.
Police said a Second Precinct officer was advised of a loose pit bull acting aggressively in the vicinity of South Street and Audrey Avenue around 7 a.m. Thursday. Upon arrival, the officer found the pit bull attacking the woman, 51, and her dog.
Police said the woman then fell to the ground, striking her head and causing a contusion. The officer attempted to pull the pit bull away from the victims, at which time the dog lunged at the officer, forcing him to discharge his weapon and kill the animal.
The woman was transported to a nearby hospital to be treated, while her dog was removed to a veterinarian and the deceased animal was removed by the Town Of Oyster Bay Animal Control. No other injuries were reported.
