Cops: Man Stole Car in Brookville

A man stole a car in Brookville, and used a credit card to buy gas for the car Friday, police say. 

Nassau police say John Shute, 40 years old, with no known address, was arrested at 3:45 p.m. Friday. According to detectives, Shute got into a Chevy Suburban that was parked at Brookville Farms at 1472 Route 107 and fled in an unknown direction.

Responding Old Brookville Police Officers found the car driving south on Route 107. Officers stopped the vehicle and arrested Shute without incident. 

During the investigation Shute was found in the possession of a black wallet containing credit cards and personal papers reported stolen earlier in the day from a female victim’s vehicle in Roslyn, police said.  It was determined that Shute used the victim’s credit card to purchase items at a gas station.

Shute is charged with second-degree forgery, two counts of fourth-degree grand larceny, fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, third-degree criminal mischief, second-degree identity theft, and second-degree aggravated unlicensed. 

He was scheduled for arraignment Saturday at First District Court in Hempstead.
