Crime Nearby: Fatal Stabbing, Upstate Murder

Holbrook

Police have arrested two people, including one on a murder charge in connection with an early morning stabbing in Holbook, law enforcement officials said. Robert Gregory, 19, of Farmingville, is charged with second degree murder stemming from the incident outside of Momo's Bar & Grill around midnight Wednesday that killed Holbrook's Julian Pena.

Lindenhurst

A Lindenhurst man was one of two people arrested in connection with the 2008 killing of a Narrowsburg, New York, woman, New York State Police said. According to police, Scott Sherwood, 40, has been charged with one count of second-degree murder in the death of Catherine Novak, 41. He was arraigned in Sullivan County Court. Sherwood's being held without bail in Sullivan County Jail.  Paul Novak, 45, of Palm Coast, Fla., was also arrested. Police said Novak is facing two counts of second-degree murder and one count of three-degree arson.

Great Neck

Nassau County police say a Manhasset man was arrested for criminal possession of a weapon and another for illegal drug possession after shots were fired during an altercation Sunday in Great Neck. When a fight broke out  at 5:52 p.m., a handgun was discharged before two men — who were fighting against the larger group of unidentified men — fled the scene in a Honda Civic, according to police. The two suspects were located by police inside the car in a parking garage nearby. Police say the men were found to be in possession of multiple clear plastic bags of marijuana, according to police, who recovered a loaded automatic handgun from the car. Rodney D. Jackson Jr., 21, of Manhasset was arrested and charged with second degree criminal possession of a weapon second degree, second degree menacing and second degree reckless endangerment. Kyle M. Howard, 18, of Westbury was arrested and charged with fifth degree criminal possession of marijuana.

No injuries were reported. 

Massapequa

A Massapequa man who owns an Elmont car dealership has been accused of failing to pay sales tax from the business between 2006 and 2010, Nassau County prosecutors said. Philip Shaw, 47, allegedly stole more than $200,000 in tax revenue. He turned himself in Monday morning, prosecutors said. Shaw, the owner of High Gear, Inc., never filed any withholding tax, corporation tax, federal income tax, or sales tax returns since 2006, according to prosecutors, but a 2010 audit shows that Shaw reported more than $2 million in sales from 2006 to 2010. He  allegedly never reported the sales to the state Tax Department.

A Massapequa woman received a call from a man who claimed to be a lawyer representing her son, and another man who claimed to be a lawyer for the U.S. Embassy in Peru, police said. The men claimed that her son had been arrested on drug charges and instructed her to send a moneygram. Thw woman did so and later discovered her son was not in Peru. When a man called back asking for more money, the woman declined. The incident came just a few days after police said another Massapequa woman was conned by a man who claimed her grandson had been arrested in Mexico.

A Huntington Station man was accused Tuesday night of selling drugs in the Massapequa area. The Nassau County narcotics/vice squad said Bentley Sanon, 29,  was charged with criminal sale of a controlled substance. According to detectives, Sanon sold an undisclosed amount of heroin to undercover detectives on three separate occasions between July 2011 and March 2012 in the Massapequa area.

Levittown

A gazebo across the street from the Levittown Library was badly damaged by vandals last week, forcing the Town of Hempstead Parks Department to remove the remaining structure due to safety concerns.  Jacklyn Nogan, a spokeswoman for the Levittown Library, told Patch that just the platform of the gazebo remains at Veterans Memorial Park after vandals caused significant damage to the structure. The gazebo was purchased by the Levittown Chamber of Commerce in 2001.  Nogan served as president of the chamber at the time.

Syosset

Two churches were the targets of burglars within one week of each other. St. Edward the Confessor in Syosset and United Methodist Church in Hicksville were both targeted, Nassau police said. Hauppauge

Suffolk County police have identified Thomas Wik Jr., 23, of Nesconset as the man killed after being hit by a car in Hauppauge on Saturday morning. Wik was walking eastbound on Nesconset Highway when he was hit by a 2006 Honda driven by Craig Williams, 38, of Nesconset. Williams left the scene of the crash, and was arrested a short time later. Police have charged Williams with leaving the scene of the accident and he was later arraigned at court in Central Islip.

Plainview

Nassau County Police reported 17 different car related crimes in Plainview and neighboring communities within a 15-day period. In total, three cars were stolen, five cars had personal belongings stolen from them, and nine cars sustained damage and vandalism. A car's tires and rims were stolen in Plainview, tires were slashed on a car in Bethpage, and three cars were stolen in Woodbury and Hicksville.
