Dumpster Fire Shuts Down Syosset CVS

The Syosset F.D. puts out flames before they can take out building.

The Syosset Fire Department's proximity to CVS proved helpful Thursday night when a fire broke out in a Dumpster adjacent to the store.

According to CVS employees, the store's fire alarm sounded around 8 p.m. Smoke eventually started billowing into the store, possibly from the building's air conditioning vents.

Apparently the fire spread from the Dumpster to some wood on the outside, which then ignited the side of the building. But the store, at 55 Cold Spring Rd., is literally just a stone's throw away from the fire department, at 50 Cold Spring Rd. Volunteers were able to get the flames under control before they could pose a more serious threat to the building.

Employees spent the evening outside the entrance letting shoppers know that the store was closed. However, they did allow a few people to pick up prescriptions, including a father anxious to get medicine to a sick 3-year-old.

An investigator from the Nassau County Fire Marshal was just getting to the scene around 10 p.m. A Nassau County Police Department officer who said he was first on the scene told the investigator it was a "pretty good sized fire" before they entered the closed-off scene.
