Power was temporarily shut to the LIRR tracks from Syosset to Cold Spring Harbor so Syosset firefighters could retrieve , according to officials. Nassau County and MTA police joined the Nassau County Ambulance crew and Syosset firefighters to bring the man to safety.
At about 2 p.m. Saturday, Syosset firefighters, while operating at an EMS incident and responding to an automatic fire alarm, were called to the LIRR tracks near Victor Lane. A cyclist had been biking through Stillwell Park's trails when he was overcome with heat exhaustion and made his way toward the train tracks.
Power was shut to the train tracks between and Cold Spring Harbor stations for approximately 25 minutes, according to Silver, so that an EMS Rescue Gator vehicle and two quads could make their way down the tracks to rescue the man.
Two firefighters sustained minor injuries and were treated on the scene.
Several trains on the Syosset line were held up in the process of getting the cyclist to safety. According to @LIRRScoop on Twitter, the last train to report any trouble was the 2:25 p.m. from Penn to Huntington, which was running 10 minutes behind schedule.
