Thomas Feeney, Jr. was elected to the Syosset Board of Fire Commissioners Tuesday by an overwhelming margin.
Feeney, 43, a former Chief of the Department, won the five-year term over Richard Meinhardt, 222-94. There was one write-in vote. He’ll replace outgoing Roy Brouillard as one of five commissioners.
“I want to thank everyone who came out and supported me,” Feeney said. “I’m very happy to become a commissioner. I’ve been through the ranks. It’s a good feeling that I can still help the community.”
It’s been a whirlwind year for Feeney. The 24-year veteran of the Syosset Fire Department saw his home gutted by a basement fire Dec. 28, 2011. The family dog Seven sounded the alarm.

Luckily, no one was injured and his family moved back in three weeks before Hurricane Sandy. The storm knocked out power for more than a week, but caused no real damage.
In the mean time, Feeney kept busy. Feeney’s term as Chief ended in 2009. Yet the volunteer firefighter still goes on calls.
“I still respond to calls and make my quota,” Feeney said.
Now he's climbed the ladder to the top.
