Firemen Bid Farewell to Fallen Comrade

Jericho captain lost in the line of duty this weekend.

Firemen from across Nassau County joined together Monday to say goodbye to Captain George A. Turner Jr., who died unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack while responding to a crash on the Long Island Expressway. He was 60 years old.

Captain Turner worked in Locust Valley, Glen Cove, and Glenwood Landing Fire Departments before joining the Jericho ranks in 2005. Turner was elected Captain of Trident Engine Company #3 in December 2012. An active member of the department's Rehab team and 9th Battalion HazMat Decon Task Force, Captain Turner was Jericho's top responder.

Captain Turner was responding to an accident on the LIE Friday when he suffered a heart attack.

A firematic service was held at Jericho Fire Department Station #1 Monday night where fellow firemen from across the region joined in honoring their fallen friend and comrade.

According to Jericho Fire Department, Captain Turner is the third member to be lost in the line of duty in the department's history.

A funeral mass will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Brookville. A cremation will follow.
