A man, formerly of Syosset, dubbed "the most wanted deadbeat parent" by the Department of Health and Human Services has been brought into custody for escaping over $1,000,000 in child support payments, reports say.
According to Newsday, Robert Sand, 50, had lived in Thailand for the greater part of 10 years, hiding from three arrest warrants and evading child support payments to his three children.
Sand, who lived in Syosset and worked at an auto auction business prior to trouble with the law, "owes more than $1 million in child support for the three children he fathered with two ex-wives, according to prosecutors who have been on the fugitive’s trail since 2002," reported the New York Daily News.
According to the reports, Sand had lived in Thailand for about eight years, but attempted to enter the Philippines without any identification Nov. 28. It was then, wrote Newsday, that he admitted to officials he was a "wanted man."
Sand was arrested on American territory Monday when he landed in Los Angeles, said Newsday.
Previously indicted in 2009 on two counts of failure to pay child support, Sand has failed to comply with court orders several times since 1996 "before fleeing to Thailand where he sold motorcycles for a living," according to The New York Daily News.
Sand will head to federal court Jan. 16 in Central Islip, said Newsday.
