Nassau Police Car Catches Fire Outside Syosset FD

Officer smelled smoke and pulled over in the perfect spot to tame a fire.

A Nassau County Police car caught fire early Monday morning in front of , according to police.

An officer was driving near the Syosset Fire Department at 12:11 a.m. on Monday when he smelled smoke in his vehicle, said police. The officer pulled over at fire headquarters on Cold Spring Road, grabbed a fire extinguisher from his car, and put out the fire, said police.

"It was an engine compartment fire," explained Syosset Fire Chief Robert Kaplan. "We could see it right on our security cameras."

"I kind of laughed when I got the call," said Kaplan, referring to the conveniently short trip to the scene.

The fire was small and was tamed quickly by the officer and firemen, said police.
