Photo of the Day: Syosset Firefighters Win Cookoff

Syosset beat out four other departments to win the top prize Friday.

The won 1st Place in the Sponsored by Fairway Market this past Friday at the Nassau County Firefighters Museum in Uniondale. 

Chef and Syosset Fire Commissioner Frank Vasile arrived at the museum at 4 a.m. to begin smoking his ribs, and he used many different kinds of woods including oak, cherry and cedar. Vasile seasoned his ribs with 13 different spices and also with apple juice.

For his burger, Vasile made a jalapeño burger. This 1st place win for Syosset comes after three years of winning 2nd place.

The winner of the Fairway Firefighter Rib Rivalry and Burger Battle was chosen by an esteemed panel of judges featuring: Chef turned “Sopranos” Actor Joseph Gannascoli, Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano, Anton Community Newspapers and Boulevard Magazine Publisher Angela Anton and Fairway’s own master butcher and TV personality, Ray Venezia.

The Nassau County fire departments that participated in this heated competition included: Bethpage FD, Freeport FD, North Massapequa FD, Rockville Centre FD, and Syosset FD.

The North Massapequa Fire Department came in 2nd place and Bethpage Fire Department came in 3rd.

The contest was sponsored by Fairway Market, which supplied each team of firefighters with a $100 shopping card to pick up it’s ribs, burgers, toppings, secret ingredients and spices.
