According to a report in Newsday

"You'd expect skid marks, grass to be disturbed," [Southampton Town Police Chief William Wilson] said. "It was bizarre -- and I've been doing this for 27 years -- because of the lack of evidence. It was a bit of a 'whodunit.'

"We're dedicating all of our investigative resources into finding this person," Wilson said. "We will not rest until we take a suspect into custody. We're hoping that conscience gets the better of him."

Meanwhile, police say they currently know the identity of the man and though they have not released his name, they have given a description.

Detectives are searching for a white Hispanic male, approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall, in his 20s or 30s, with short spiked hair, and was reportedly wearing a white shirt with dark shorts at the time of the accident,. A 2009 Volkswagen Touareg with front end damage was found about a half-mile from the accident scene.

Anyone find it somewhat unusual that the police know who the suspect is, announce they are actively looking for him, but won't release the name or photo of the suspect? Weird.
