Syosset FD: Leave Fireworks to Professionals

Thousands are injured by use, and they're illegal.

The Syosset Fire Department reminds residents not to light fireworks during the July 4th holiday.  Fireworks are illegal to own or use by anyone other than licensed professionals in the state of New York.

"As we celebrate Independence Day, we urge all area residents to make sure this holiday is a safe one for their families and friends," said Chief of Department John Capobianco.  "Fireworks such as bottle rockets can lead to severe injuries and can cause property damage.  Sparklers can cause burns and lead to fires.  Leave the fireworks to the pros – those who are properly trained in the safe handling and discharge of fireworks."

According to the Office of Fire Prevention and Control (OFPC), each year, thousands of people are treated in emergency rooms for injuries sustained from the usage of fireworks, the highest rate of injury being to children under 15 years of age.  The most common injuries that occur are to the hands and fingers, eyes, and the head and face.  The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates that in 2008 about 7,000 people were treated in hospital emergency rooms for injuries associated with fireworks.

On Long Island and in the New York City metropolitan area, there will be several fireworks shows on July 4th.  No matter what the venue, always make sure to follow the safety tips below:

  • The safest and best way to avoid injury is to view fireworks displays by trained professionals.
  • Obey and respect any and all public safety barriers set up around the site.  They are there not only to keep crowds away from the professional fireworks set-up, but for your protection, as well.
  • Resist the temptation to get close to the firing site. Often, the best view of a professional fireworks display is from a quarter of a mile or more away.
  • Leave your pets at home - the loud noise can scare animals and hurt their sensitive hearing.
  • Do not possess or shoot off fireworks on your own. Besides risking injury to yourself and the crowd watching the demonstration, YOU WILL BE BREAKING THE LAW.
  • Do not pick up or attempt to re-light used or "dud" fireworks – for instance, expended bottle rockets that have landed in the street or in your yard.  They may still cause serious burns or injury.
