Syosset Fire Dept. Responds to Golf Course

False alarm brings no harm, but a few chuckles.

A golfer on the driving range at the Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course took a break from his game, looked back at the Syosset Fire Department contingent entering the pro shop and deadpanned, "Somebody must really be burning up the course."

Many other golfers couldn't be bothered to pay attention, even though from the trucks that showed up at the course it looked like a big deal. The SFD responded when a fire alarm went off inside the facility late Monday morning.

Soon after arriving, the firefighters had discovered the cause. The course is changing over its alarm service, and the old system was apparently still live and went off while the installation was taking place.

Firemen holding axes stood feet away from retirees holding 3-irons before the false alarm was confirmed and the trucks sped away.

Before they left, a probie (probationary) fireman was asked if he wanted to take a few swings.

"I'd love to," he responded. "I work here."
