Syosset's 'Deadbeat Dad' Sentenced

Robert Sand gets 31 months after pleading guilty for escaping child support payments.

A former Syosset man, once called "the most wanted deadbeat parent" by Health and Human Services, was sentenced to almost three years in prison Tuesday, according to Newsday.

Robert Sand, 50, was sentenced by a federal judge to serve 31 months in jail and to make $903,000, on top of interest and penalties, in restitution to his ex-wives, said the report.

Sand pleaded guilty in February to two counts of failing to pay child support from two separate marriages and agreed to pay $1,200,000.

After fleeing to Thailand for almost 10 years to escape three arrest warrants and paying child support for three children from two marriages. The act led the Department of Health and Human Services to reportedly dub Sand "the most wanted deadbeat parent."

Sand was finally arrested after he was caught attempting to enter the Philippines without identification in November.

According to Newsday, Sand's attorney, Glenn Obedin, said Sand "understands the seriousness of his unfortunate actions. The only disappointment he finds in the sentence is the delay in his ability to immediately . . . repay the debt he owes."
