Video: Police Spread Awareness at National Night Out

The event was held in conjunction with the Oyster Bay classic car show Tuesday night.

The 28th annual “National Night Out,” a drug and crime awareness and prevention program held county-wide Tuesday night, saw officers from the second precinct spread important information to residents.

Each Nassau County precinct held events in separate locations. The second precinct event coincided with the Oyster Bay classic car show, located in front of town hall on Audrey Avenue.

“We do it with the car show because it tends to draw a lot of people,” said officer Fucito of the second precinct.

Some of the brochures handed out at the police table included ways to protect children from online predators, how to make homes more secure, and how to protect against identity theft.

“Online predators present the number one danger your child faces when surfing the net,” the brochure reads. “Nassau County police wants you to know that there are preventative measures that can greatly reduce a child’s chances of becoming a victim.”

Some of those tips include not visiting online chat rooms, sharing personal information, and keeping computers in a public room in the house.

A classic 1950’s police car was on display right next to the police booth. The black Ford model carries a long history.

“In the 50’s you would have seen them around here in Oyster Bay and in Syosset, patrolling the streets,” said officer Zacchia of the Public Information Office.

Zacchia added that all the police cars used to be black in color, while a special white car dubbed the “ghost control” was used for vigorous traffic enforcement.

“It was called that because it used to sneak up on people, “Zacchia said of the car.

Nassau County Legislator said another reason for the event is to give back.

"It's a time for all of us to say thank you to the police," Jacobs said. "It gives us the opportunities to recognize the job they do for all of us."
