You Decide: The Top Syosset Police Story of 2011

As safe as Syosset is, this little Long Island town has had a fair share of scandals, crimes and tragedies over the past year. From bank robbers to restaurant bandits, from semi automatics on the side of the road to the unfortunate losses of our young neighbors, this year has been an eventful one.

A Huntington Station woman was killed and two other people were injured when a car crossed over the median, striking another vehicle head-on, according to police.

Jane Martin, 82, was killed in the accident, according to police. The June crash occurred in Woodbury on Jericho Turnpike, about a half mile east of Crossways Park Drive.

 

In May, Joseph Carbone, a Syosset resident who was arrested in a much-publicized  in June 2010, was sentenced to a one-year of jail on weekends, according to the Nassau District Attorney's office. Carbone is serving Friday to Sunday evenings for a year and will also have to use an ignition interlock device in his car for three years. The device will not allow his car to start if it detects any trace of alcohol.

 

Three men were charged in the March 2009 abduction and killing of two African immigrants, according to the Nassau DA. One of the murders took place at the Woodbury condo owned by ex-New York Jets linebacker Jonathan Vilma. Rice said that on March 26, 2009, Kevin McLeod, Andre Dickenson and Jovany Henrius, a cousin of Vilma's, participated in the abduction of Sekou Sackor and Ansu Keita, two African immigrants from the Bronx. The driver who, while high on cancer painkillers,  will spend up to 10 years in prison, according to the Nassau County District Attorney's office. Jeremy Weckerle, 33, of North Babylon, was convicted of second-degree manslaughter by Judge Alan Honorof and sentenced to five to 10 years in prison Monday for his role in the death of Paul Gordon on Sept. 14, 2010.

 

A man got away with an undisclosed amount of cash after robbing the Bank of America on Jericho Turnpike in March. Police released surveillance video and photos in an effort to catch the perp.

Oleksandr Safronov, 15 of Bethpage, was skateboarding with a friend on the west shoulder of South Oyster Bay Road when he was hit by a blue 2002 Cheverolet Impala driving south, according to police. The impact threw Safronov into his friend, another 15-year-old.

Katherine Yun, 25 of Syosset, was walking north in Williamsburg, Brooklyn after 7 p.m. Wednesday night when she came to the intersection of Driggs Avenue and Broadway. According to police, it was when she crossed Broadway that she was struck by an eastbound New York City sanitation truck.

Over 100 North Syosset residents gathered at the November to find out what police are doing about the suspicious increase in break-ins. Officers, inspectors and detectives were questioned thoroughly by members, some of whom doubt the effects local officials have on decreasing crime.

Most recently, residents of South Syosset have joined together to brainstorm ways of protecting their neighborhood.


A 43-year-old man was robbed on Berry Hill Road by two men with semi-automatic weapons on Friday evening, according to Second Squad detectives. Police reported that the man pulled over after a large GMC truck flashed their lights at him. Two men holding semi automatic weapons got out of the GMC, demanded the victim's bag, and drove away without harming the victim. 

Two men, one with a handgun and one with a crowbar, held up Cafe Testarossa in November before business hours, getting away with employee cell phones. The men tied up three employees as they arrived for work, tried to make them open the restaurant safe, and gave up when none could produce the codes.
