Hearings to Examine LIPA's 'Epic Failure'

Carl Marcellino to hold public hearings on company's storm response.

As LIPA tries to remedy the post-Sandy situation, including getting thousands back online and searching for a new chief operating officer, they will also be preparing answers about their company's storm response for a government investigation.

, announced Tuesday that as Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Investigations and Government Operations, he will head a set of hearings to investigate LIPA's response to Hurricane Sandy.

"LIPA's snail-like response time, glaring lack of communication and epic failure to plan ahead for post-storm restorations must be addressed," said Marcellino, who said taxpayers should be able to expect more considering the high rates they pay. The newly reelected state senator is one of many politicians calling for action against the power company.

Marcellino commended the efforts of crews and first responders who have worked day and night to restore Long Island to normalcy. It is LIPA's now twice-failed, "fatally flawed" preparedness system that he says must be addressed.

"…it is clear that we must again take a look at LIPA’s response and determine if they are truly prepared and competent to go forward and provide services for the residents and ratepayers on Long Island," said Marcellino, who said the experts heading LIPA failed to use the time they had to prepare for such a storm.

At a post-Irene hearing in Sept. 2011, Marcellino said it had been recommended that LIPA revamp outreach, the accuracy of their outage map, training representatives at call centers, outage reporting, restoration staffing and coordination, electric system maintenance, and mismanagement.

Marcellino said he has given LIPA plenty of time to prepare for the hearings, which have not yet been formally scheduled.

Do we really need hearings and a commission report that will cost millions in taxpayer dollars? Do we need to listen to politicians attack an entity that they themselves created and loaded with $6.5B in debt and rigged it to fail? We all know LIPA screwed up. I dont need a taxpayer funded 1000 page report to tell me that. We need LIPA fixed now! I want to hear one politician address the real problem with LIPA. The utility is bankrupt. It needs to default on their debt rather than have LIers continue to pay 20% of thier bills to this outrageuos outstanding Shoreham debt that we've been paying off for 30 years and will continue to pay for another 30 years. Not a single one will address that issue because they don't want to offend their campaign contributors, the banks that hold this debt. It didn't have to be this way!

Re: "Not a single one will address that issue because they don't want to offend their campaign contributors, the banks that hold this debt. It didn't have to be this way!" You've got that right!!!! Plus everyone at LIPA has the same DNA - so they don't want to offend their relatives. Speaking of Banks, how many people do you know of who had no gas, electric or phone got charged "late fees" or had checks they mailed out before "Sandy" fail to get paid because the poor people couldn't get to the bank to deposit money to cover their bills. Weren't those leeches supposed to waive fees during a National Disaster?

For instance, critical thinking is not about finding fault with people who make noise by using leafRead More blowers, but about an in-depth thinking of goals and values we will achieve by limiting their use. People could earn more quality life and peace of mind by having quiet time in the early morning and the late evening. The value of mental peace is regarded crucial in our life. Critical thinking gives us a process of thinking to get into the depth of the problem. It begins with an analysis of the situation (structure, background, or setting), in which the information of when, where, and who is identified. The information may help set up seasonal differences in restricting hours of leaf blower operation. Further thinking will lead critical thinkers to note the implication of the new ordinance to the business of licensed landscapers. Also, critical thinkers may think about the development of a soundproof leaf blowing machine. Critical thinking helps us to increase and share our common values, rather than tries to find faults with people who make problems.
