More Snow For Syosset Wednesday

The National Weather Service has called for 12 to 18 inches of snow for Tuesday night and Wednesday.

Snow is heading into our area Tuesday night, and it appears Long Island is going to bear the brunt of it.

The National Weather Service is calling for 12 to 18 inches on Long Island and has issued a winter storm warning in effect for 7 p.m. until 6 p.m. Wednesday. Heavy snow and winds of up to 35 mph will make travel dangerous and you should stay inside unless you absolutely have to go out.

That sentiment was echoed by Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto, who declared a snow emergency on Tuesday afternoon.

The swift 911 system was activated, and residents were reminded to stay home and clear their vehicles and basketball hoops off the street to allow snow plows easier access.

Homeowners were reminded to shovel snow onto grassy areas and not onto streets and sidewalks. Fire hydrants should be kept clear.

Town spokeswoman Phyllis Barry said the town, which has $1.8 million budgeted for snow removal in 2011, has 300 trucks available for the highway, parks sanitation and recycling departments.

For major storms, the town will use outside contractors if needed, but no decision has been made on that as of yet.
