Peter Schmitt Hospitalized

Nassau County Legislative Majority Leader stable after breathing difficulty.

Nassau Legislative Majority Leader Peter Schmitt, R-Massapequa, was hospitalized Monday after encountering breathing problems.

Schmitt, 60, began experiencing difficulty shortly before 1 p.m., according to his press secretary, Christina Brennan.

"He was experiencing shortness of breath and we called an ambulance," Brennan said.

Schmitt was taken to Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, according to Brennan.

"He's completely stable, they found some fluid on his lungs," she said. It wasn't immediately known what's causing the condition, but Schmitt will be held overnight for observation.

Schmitt was first elected to the County Legislature in 1995 and is serving his eighth term. He has been the presiding officer and Majority leader of the legislature since 2010 and served as deputy presiding officer from 1996 to 1999.
