Pols: Keep Hotel Keys Out of Sex Offenders' Hands

Bill would require employers to engage in more scrutiny.

Politicians, including Nassau County Legis. Judy Jacobs, D-Woodbury, held a press conference recently to announce a proposal that would strengthen the county's sex offender monitoring law.

If passed,  hotel or motel employees who are registered sex offenders in New York State would be barred from having access to room keys.

"Keys grant access and access implies trust," said Laura Ahearn, executive director for Parents for Megan's Law. "Convicted sex offenders have demonstrated that they cannot be trusted and legislative action is needed to protect our most vulnerable."

The legislation calls for the screening and monitoring of all employees, and would also prohibit any employee who is a registered sex offender from working any event or party where children would be present.
