Smoking Bans in Syosset

Is lifting the Town of Hempstead ban an idea for Syosset?

Yesterday was in the Town of Oyster Bay. At a TOBAY meeting earlier this month, officials proclaimed May 31 to be a Town-wide day of recognition of the dangers of smoking.

"The anxiety when you get a cold that won't go away, and you go to the doctor and they have to do chest x-rays," said TOBAY Supervisor John Venditto, speaking from personal experience. "You're shaving time off your life out of sheer worry."

However, we also reported yesterday that the Town of Hempstead had lifted the ban on smoking at parks, beaches, and historic sites after smokers' rights groups pressured officials.

Is lifting the ban a good or bad idea? Was the ban necessary to begin with or were town officials overstepping their boundaries? Would a ban like that work in the Town of Oyster Bay?

Smoking is not good! BUT....Control is worse! Mayor Bloomberg is attempting to ban soda in NYC and to me, nothing is worse than that! As we continue to give the govt. the power to tell us we can not eat, drink, smoke, etc... then next it will be where to go, what to do, what to think! I grew up here in the 50's and 60's and remember cigarettes put out on the supermarket floors. That has stopped as did most other places people can smoke. OK...smoking is bad but most smokers today are very self controlled being aware that many people don't like to be around it. One day the non smokers will be targeted by the govt. for something they enjoy that may not be all that healthy for them! The more we agree to let them ban ANYTHING the more they will feel the right to do so....and for OUR benefit. NO...... NO bans!

I agree with Randy. This government drive to micromanage behavior started with cigarettes and now it's soda. A perfect example of why governments shouldn't be allowed to get into the business of controlling personal decisions. What's next? Hot dogs? Exposure to a few noxious things is the price you pay to live in a free society.
