Should Syosset Ban Plastic-Foam Containers?

New York's Mayor said outlawing the packaging would curtail an annual waste stream of about 20,000 tons of plastic foam.

In his final State of the City address, Mayor Michael Bloomberg proposed a citywide ban on plastic-foam food packaging, which environmentalists have derided for years.

If it's good for the City, why not Syosset? So much of the hamlet is driven by eateries and the dining experience, which means so much waste in the form of takeout containers. It's within the power of the Town of Oyster Bay to legislate.

If Bloomberg gets his way, New York would become the first east coast city to implement the ban, which already exists on various levels in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Seattle.

A restaurant owner who spoke to a Patch staffer in Brooklyn argued that the ban would hurt the economy, though many others also support the ban.

Our question: Should the ban exist statewide? Let us know in comments.

I hate those styrofoam products....only bio-degradeable products should be used

Yes! I don't care how cheap the dollar stores sell 'em. Do like I do and politely walk out of any store that can't provide a paper cup or plate.

When my children were in elementary school, I asked the PTA every year to stop using styrofoam plates and bowls to serve lunch. How can we teach our children to protect the environment, while showing them we'll forget our ideals in a heartbeat to save a few dollars?

Nothing wrong with them. They work better that cardboard and can be recycled and used again and again and never even make it to a land fill

Yes! Keep the foam. Works better than paper, saves trees and it can be recycled. Don't fall for this propaganda
