Rep. Steve Israel said on a Sunday talk show that “to a significant extent, the Republican base has elements that are animated by racism, and that’s unfortunate.”

The chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee made these remarks to CNN’s Candy Crowley on “State of the Union,” when discussing whether race played a role in the Republican party’s opposition to immigration reform in Congress.

The Republican majority in the House of Representatives has not acted on a sweeping immigration reform bill that passed the senate last year.

Earlier in the week, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said in a news conference that she thought race was a factor in Republicans not “bringing up an immigration bill. I've heard them say to the Irish, if it were just you this would be easy.”

On “State of the Union” Sunday, Crowley asked, “Do you think your Republican colleagues are racist?”

“Not all of them, no, of course not,” Israel said.

When asked by Crowley whether racism played a role, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee Greg Walden, who was also a guest on the show, responded, “That is both wrong and unfortunate.”

Do you think racism is a factor in the debate on immigration reform? Tell us in the comments.

Racism is not a factor in illegal immigration although a lot of our elected officials are using it as a soap box. If Racism was the problem, Obama would not be in the White House, as he needed the White vote! Isreal and his cronies are worried about the upcoming election and know they are in deep trouble due to the fact that Democrats who voted for the party in 2012 have wised up and will vote them out. They want the illegal's to be able to vote, as the majority will vote Democrat. Our county as we know it is in deep trouble. As John Kennedy said "Ask not what your country can do for you, Ask what you can do for your country." Today, a large part of our population expects the country to do all!

Steve Israel should be ashamed of himself. Ever since he became head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, he has moved further and further left. I cannot believe this man is a suitable representative for the electorate of his district. I look forward to voting for his opponent in November.

I would like to thank everyone for supporting Congressman Israel. If he is not re-elected, I will lose my unemployment insurance, free health care for my family and will need to find work. By the way, does anyone know if Obamacare covers braces?

It does cover your adult diapers, though Bunker.
