Syosset Vet Receives Overdue Benefits

Samuel DePaul gets a huge check from Congressman.

Tuesday was a monumental day for World War II Veteran Samuel DePaul.

After waiting more than six decades, DePaul received retroactive benefits totaling $77,113.24. He was presented with a huge check from U.S. Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington) at Eugene S. Smith American Legion Post 175 in Syosset.

DePaul attempted for many years on his own to receive his benefits, without success. He then contacted Israel's office, and with the congressman's involvement, an error was detected. DePaul had been inaccurately rated on the extent of his disabilities since 1947.

During his tour of duty as a forward observer for the 3rd Infantry, 85-year-old DePaul sustained gunshot wounds to his neck and chest while in combat.

"I was shot by a sniper three days before the war was over," said DePaul.

He spent the next year recovering from his wounds at a Staten Island hospital. In addition to the sniper attack, DePaul was injured by a hand grenade.

"I can't use my left arm because of it. I lost all of my muscle movement," he said.

As an advocate for veterans and military families, Israel was happy to assist DePaul.

"Samuel DePaul literally took bullets for his country during World War II," Israel said. "Yet for more than 60 years, he's had to fight for the benefits that he deserves. We can't send our troops to war one day and forget about them the next."

DePaul spent more than 30 years following the war as the owner of Comos Fruit and Vegetable Store in Brooklyn. He's lived in Syosset for the past 53 years with wife Lena. They have two children, Sandy and Anthony, and one grandchild.

An ecstatic DePaul said he knew exactly how he will spend the money.

"I am getting a new kitchen, new toilets and going on a cruise to the Bahamas," DePaul said. "This money means a lot to me and I am very happy."
