Tell Us: GPS Leading Truckers Astray?

Sen. Schumer to regulate GPS devices to alert truckers to roads they shouldn't be on. What do you think?

Sen. Charles Schumer is proposing a federal probe into the frequency of trucks striking low bridges, particularly on parkways in the Metropolitan area.

Schumer, D-NY, has called for new federal standards for GPS devices, which Schumer says is leading truckers, many from out of state, onto roads not built for trucks.

Anyone who has listened to a traffic report in New York can understand the frustration of sitting on the Southern or Northern State, sometimes for hours, after a wayward truck slams into a low-hanging bridge. The bridges were built that way to prevent commercial vehicles from ever using the parkways.

Is there an easier way to solve this problem? Should the federal government really be monitoring this? Are the fines stiff enough for truck drivers and their employers who don't understand the meaning of "No Commercial Traffic" signs?
