Town Board Holding First Post-Victory Meeting

Tuesday's session will likely include some comments about Oyster Bay's big win in the mall fights.

The Oyster Bay Town Board meets Tuesday in regular session, the first time it has met formally since it's big victory in the mall fight.

It's likely that Supervisor John Venditto will address the issue and the town's response to August's victory in the town-wide referendum.

Oyster Bay voters decided overwhelmingly to allow the town to sell a 53-acre parcel of its land, specifically, the current Department of Public Works property in Syosset, for $32.5 million.

The sale was made to a coalition of interests represented by the mall giant Simon Properties. They have been in an 18-year-long struggle to prevent its competitor, Taubman, from building an upscale mall in that area.

By selling to Simon, the town gets about $30 million this year and makes it harder for Taubman to build its mega-mall. The fight may go on in the courts, however.

There are no public hearings scheduled on the agenda, and the agenda itself is fairly routine. See it here, then click on "September 17."
