Jackson Avenue Improvement Project – The First Month

The first month of the Jackson Avenue Improvement Project is now one for the books.

One month down, 17 more months to go!

Last week marked the first full month of work by construction crews in the reconstruction and renovation of the mile long stretch of Jackson Avenue from Jericho Turnpike to the Syosset LIRR Station.

Catch basins were installed in the vicinity of Albert Avenue, Lewis Lane, Lucille Drive, Dorcas Avenue, and Walters Avenue (Citgo Station). Fire hydrants were repositioned on the west side of Jackson Avenue. Sidewalks were ripped up from Dawes Avenue to Lucille Drive.

In an effort to straighten out the curve by Lewis Lane, the houses on the north and south sides of Lewis Lane lost approximately 20 feet of their front lawns to the construction (see photos).

This also impacted the Community Garden that has been maintained by the RESIDENTS for a more beautiful Syosset for more than ten years. Much of the garden has been destroyed by the construction (see photos). Upon completion of the Jackson Avenue construction, the group plans to reconstruct the Community Garden. It will require a redesigned “narrow and longer” plan, since the new roadway and sidewalk boundaries have impinged on the present garden. The group is soliciting donations for this project, which can be sent to RESIDENTS for a more beautiful Syosset, P.O. Box 446, Syosset, NY, 11791.

As in the past weeks, the traffic seemed to flow smoothly. One person, who daily uses this roadway, commented to me that he felt that the traffic flow was better now than before the beginning of the construction.

During the next 17 months of this project, you may call Daniel Midgette, Project Manager for the Town of Oyster Bay, at 516-677-5897, or TOBAY Emergency at 516-677-5757 with any questions or concerns that you may have about the Jackson Avenue Improvement Project.

We’ll see what the second month has in store for us as construction continues on Monday.
