Jackson Avenue Improvement Project -- Week 23

The pace of construction slowed to a snail's pace this week along Jackson Avenue.

This week was a very slow one for the construction crews on this road project, as only a few small projects were completed.

Decorative brick work was laid in front of the Rite Aid Shopping Center and the Wells Fargo Bank to enhance the sidewalk area with its new decorative lighting.

In the quiet of one late evening, new striping for the traffic lanes and turn arrows for the center turn lane were painted along the avenue from Jericho Turnpike to Lewis Lane.

Mulch was put down along the white plastic fence by the houses across the street from the Citgo Station (Devine Avenue) to discourage the weeds that usually grow there.

Although the construction has slowed considerably along the avenue this week, it was a "speedy" week for drivers during the morning rush. As I walked the avenue at 8:30 AM this past week, some drivers thought that they were racing on the Jackson Avenue Speedway. I witnessed a few impatient drivers pass slower moving vehicles in the inner right hand lane, which is not a lane for driving. A few cars came pretty close to the new curb as they tried to pass the vehicle in front of them. This presents a danger to our residents, as many are using these new sidewalks to walk to the LIRR station to catch a morning train for work.

Maybe when the final layer of asphalt and the striping for the lanes are completed on the section of avenue from Lewis Lane to the LIRR, and the new traffic lights at Dawes Avenue are finally working, vehicular and pedestrian safety will be enhanced.
