Jackson Avenue Improvement Project – Week Seven

The Jackson Avenue Improvement Project continues to roll along.

While the main focus this week was the continuation of the installation of sidewalks and curbs, it also brought with it the beginning of the removal of the old road pavement.

The construction crews continued their installation of the new curbs and sidewalks on the west side of the avenue from Lewis Lane to Railroad Avenue. This affected the businesses at the north end of Jackson Avenue whose sidewalks and aprons were removed.

The biggest news this week was the removal of the old pavement on the west side of Jackson Avenue from Albert Avenue to Edward Avenue. As you go south to Jericho Turnpike one feels as thought they are driving on a washboard, even though the crews did add some temporary asphalt to fill in the dips that were created by the removal of the old roadway’s pavement.

The latter part of the week saw the construction crews shift to the east side of the avenue where they began the installation of catch basins and respective piping in the Rite Aid Shopping Center and Wells Fargo Bank parking lots.

The traffic continued to move pretty smoothly, although many of the community residents are using Underhill Boulevard to approach Jericho Turnpike. One can sit in a long line of backed up traffic waiting for the light to change so one could travel east on Jericho Turnpike.

With the cooperation of the weather and the hard work of the construction crews, this project seems to be moving along at a brisk pace. It may be concluded in less that the projected 18 months. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
